Before he became a hairstylist, Daniel Liao had his sights set on representing India in cricket. Hailing from Bengaluru, he was a state-level cricketer and an all-rounder with a cheerful disposition. He shared the pitch with players like Virat Kohli and Hardik Pandya, but a significant transition led him away from the cricketing world into the realm of hairstyling.

Bowling Memories and Encounters with Pakistani Cricketers

While Daniel played cricket across various age groups for Karnataka, he fondly recalls his interactions with Pakistani cricketers during net sessions back in 2005. He worked as a net bowler and still cherishes the experience of bowling to none other than Inzamam-ul-Haq. He remembered a particularly memorable moment when he bowled a slow, flight delivery to Inzamam. The Pakistani legend missed the ball and displayed his frustration. In the very next delivery, Inzamam came down the wicket and smashed Daniel for a colossal six, causing the ball to disappear. Younis Khan, the ever-supportive teammate, approached Daniel and offered words of encouragement, saying, “Beta, don’t get scared, bowl flight.”

Daniel also recollected bowling to other Pakistani players, including Salman Butt and Abdul Razzaq. He described his time with the Pakistani side as enjoyable, with the players joking and mingling during the nets.

Pakistani batters had specific requests for Daniel during net sessions, asking him to bowl leg-spin with a wet ball to replicate Anil Kumble’s style. This preparation helped the Pakistani players face spinners like Kumble more effectively.

Pakistani Cricketers: Down to Earth and Appreciative

Daniel spoke highly of the Pakistani players’ approach, noting that they were very down to earth despite being great players. He recalled a conversation with Younis Khan, who appreciated his skills and even encouraged him to come to Pakistan and play there.

In 2012, Daniel transformed his two-bedroom apartment in Bengaluru into a salon, which has since become a preferred destination for many cricketers seeking stylish haircuts. Players like Virat Kohli, Hardik Pandya, Robin Utthapa, KL Rahul, and Karun Nair have all visited his salon, especially during the IPL season.

Daniel noted that KL Rahul is particularly particular about his hairstyle, making it challenging to surprise him.

Styling Preferences of Pakistani Players

When asked about the styling preferences of Pakistani players, Daniel shared that Mohammad Rizwan’s hair and style are exceptionally neat, while Babar Azam has a trendy look. He offered a bit of advice to Imam-ul-Haq, suggesting that he trim his silky hair to better suit his facial structure.

A Plea for Sports and Unity

In a subtle reference to the Indian authorities, Daniel emphasized the unifying power of sports. He expressed his happiness at the Pakistan cricket team’s visit to Bengaluru and extended an invitation for the “Green Shirts” to visit his salon, eager to style their hair.
