To combat the rising smog levels in Lahore, the Lahore High Court (LHC) has taken decisive action by ordering the seizure of vehicles emitting smoke for multiple violations. During a recent hearing, Justice Shahid Karim directed the district administration and traffic police to implement stringent measures against vehicles contributing to air pollution.
Strict Warning to Environmental Protection Agency
The director general of the Environmental Protection Agency was sternly warned that non-compliance with the court’s directives could lead to a contempt of court notice.
Establishment of Smog Control Cells
Deputy Commissioners (DCs) throughout Punjab have been instructed to establish smog control cells to tackle this growing issue. The Commissioner of Lahore was specifically tasked with ensuring the court’s orders are executed.
Promoting Environmentally Friendly Commutes
Justice Shahid Karim encouraged government employees to opt for bicycles as an eco-friendly mode of transportation, thereby contributing to the fight against smog. The DCs were also directed to ensure the active participation of Tehsildars and police inspectors in smog reduction efforts.
Dedicated Emergency Cell
The presiding judge directed the Commissioner of Lahore to create a dedicated emergency cell within his office to address smog-related matters and prepare daily reports.
Previous Court Orders
In a bid to mitigate smog, the Lahore High Court had previously issued several stringent directives. These included a fine of Rs. 3,000 for washing vehicles at home, a Rs. 5,000 fine for improper parking, and a suspension of all new construction projects between October and March.
It’s important to note that the caretaker Punjab government had already banned smoke-emitting vehicles from entering Lahore, with Punjab Transport Secretary Ahmed Javed Qazi issuing a stern warning to officials in this regard.
