Mohammad Rizwan, Pakistan’s star batter, scored a remarkable century, helping his team achieve its highest-ever run chase in an ICC World Cup against Sri Lanka. His incredible innings of 131 runs was not only a testament to his cricketing prowess but also a heartfelt dedication to the besieged Palestinians in Gaza, who are enduring indiscriminate Israeli strikes.
Record Victory Against Sri Lanka
On Tuesday, Pakistan clinched a historic victory over Sri Lanka by defeating them with six wickets in a thrilling match that took place in Hyderabad, India. Pakistan managed to chase down a formidable target of 345 runs within 48.2 overs.
Rizwan, who remained unbeaten at 131, and his opening partner Abdullah Shafique (113) laid a solid foundation for Pakistan’s pursuit of the challenging 345-run target. The victory was sealed with 10 balls to spare.
Dedication to Besieged Palestinians
In a touching gesture, Mohammad Rizwan dedicated his remarkable century to the Palestinians in Gaza who are currently enduring the devastating impact of Israeli attacks. Taking to X, formerly Twitter, Rizwan expressed his solidarity, stating, “This was for our brothers and sisters in Gaza. Happy to contribute to the win.”
Rizwan was quick to acknowledge his teammates, attributing the victory to their collective efforts. He particularly praised Abdullah Shafique and Hassan Ali for their contributions to the team’s success.
Rizwan also extended his gratitude to the Indian fans, highlighting the incredible hospitality and support he and the team received throughout the match in Hyderabad.
Humanitarian Crisis Unfolding in Gaza
The dedication from Mohammad Rizwan comes at a time when Gaza is facing a dire humanitarian crisis. Following a surprise attack by Hamas and Israel’s response, a complete blockade has been imposed on the region. This has led to a swift unfolding of a humanitarian crisis, leaving stranded residents with a shortage of essential items.
Israel’s military has conducted airstrikes in Gaza, targeting more than 200 locations in a neighborhood of Gaza City that Hamas allegedly used to launch attacks.
Under the “complete siege,” Israel’s defense ministry halted the supply of electricity, food, water, and fuel to the enclave, exacerbating the plight of the people in Gaza.
The targets of the airstrikes, according to the Palestinian interior ministry, included “towers, residential buildings, civil and service facilities, and many mosques.” However, Hamas denied using any of the targeted towers.
The Gaza Strip has witnessed a devastating toll, with over 2,000 casualties and a staggering number of wounded individuals.
Hamas Attack in Israel
In response to the conflict, Hamas gunmen from the Gaza Strip launched an attack on parts of southern Israel, resulting in the deadliest Palestinian attack in Israel’s history.
The Israeli public broadcaster reported a significant death toll, with over 1,200 casualties.
A number of Israelis and foreigners were captured during the attack and taken to Gaza as hostages, with some of them being displayed on social media while being paraded through the streets.
Hamas cited Israeli violations at the Al-Aqsa Mosque complex in occupied East Jerusalem and escalating settler violence as the reasons behind their attack.
