Three-time former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif, the head of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N), will spearhead his party’s election campaign starting on November 10, gearing up for the upcoming general elections.
Nawaz Sharif, who returned to Pakistan on October 21 after a four-year self-imposed exile in London for medical treatment, received a grand welcome organized by his party at Lahore’s Minar-e-Pakistan.
Sources reveal that Nawaz Sharif will oversee the party’s parliamentary board for ticket distribution and lead the election campaign with nationwide tours.
“We will strengthen judicial institutions if we come into power,” said the PML-N supremo during an in-person party meeting at his Jati Umra residence, marking his first appearance in four years.
In a separate media statement, PML-N’s General Secretary Ashan Iqbal expressed the party’s desire for Nawaz Sharif to become the next prime minister. He criticized Nawaz Sharif’s ousting from electoral politics due to what he called an orchestrated conspiracy and false cases.
The PML-N meeting at Jati Umra was convened to deliberate the current political situation, general elections, and the party’s forthcoming manifesto. Notably, Nawaz Sharif has faced criticism from political opponents, including the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), for receiving alleged “undue relief” regarding various legal cases.
Since his return, Nawaz Sharif has seen his appeals reinstated by the Islamabad High Court (IHC) regarding accountability court convictions in the Avenfield and Al-Azizia cases, for which he was previously sentenced to a total of 18 years in prison. The Punjab administration also put Nawaz’s conviction in the Al-Azizia case on hold last week.
