Zaka Ashraf, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) chief, voiced concerns on the prevailing political climate within the PCB. Speaking during an interview on Geo News’ “Score” show, he delved into various aspects, including the national team’s potential in the ICC World Cup 2023, central contracts, and the Pakistan Super League schedule.
When questioned about politics within the PCB, Ashraf alluded to its existence without providing specific details. He expressed hope that Pakistan would perform well in the upcoming mega tournament and indicated that significant decisions would be contingent on the team’s performance in the World Cup.
The PCB recently announced substantial increases in player contracts, with notable bumps of 202% for key players like Babar Azam, Muhammad Rizwan, and Shaheen Shah Afridi, in addition to other benefits. Ashraf reassured Babar Azam of his complete support and clarified that the three-year contract was linked to players’ performance, implying the possibility of termination in case of poor results.
Regarding the Pakistan Super League’s ninth edition, Ashraf stated that a final decision would be made based on the evolving situation; it’s yet to be officially confirmed.
Ashraf also addressed the matter of players participating in additional leagues alongside the Pakistan Super League. He clarified that the PCB chair, rather than the chief selector Inzamam-ul-Haq, holds the authority to grant NOCs (No Objection Certificates) for such participation.
Lastly, Ashraf expressed concerns about the selection process, specifically referencing Inzamam-ul-Haq’s son’s inclusion in the squad for the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy despite concerns about his performance.
