As tensions rise between Pakistan and Iran, the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) has issued a directive to TV channels, urging extreme caution in their coverage of the regional situation. The directive, issued on Thursday afternoon, specifically targets licensees operating in the ‘news and current affairs’ and ‘regional language’ domains.
PEMRA emphasized the need for careful reporting, urging media organizations to refrain from telecasting or breaking any unsubstantiated news regarding the recent developments between the two nations. The regulatory body suggested verifying information with the spokesperson of the Foreign Office and relevant state institutions before dissemination.
Here’s what PEMRA’s notification stated:
“It would be appreciated if the information received from any source could be verified/confirmed,” stated the directive. Licensees were reminded of the expectation to present factual information that aligns with the state narrative during this crucial time.
News and programming heads, along with their respective teams, received a specific directive to verify all information thoroughly before airing. PEMRA emphasized the potential consequences of false reporting, warning that it could lead to public unrest and insecurity.
The regulatory authority reminded licensees that any violation of these orders could result in action under sections 26, 29-A, and 30 of the PEMRA Ordinance 2002, as amended by the PEMRA (Amendment) Act 2023.
