A local court in Qatar has sentenced eight Indian Navy personnel to death following their involvement in spying on Qatar’s confidential submarine program, which was linked to Israel.
Arrest and Secrecy Surrounding Charges
These Indian Navy personnel were apprehended in August of the previous year; however, the Qatari authorities did not disclose the nature of the charges against them during that time.
Espionage Unveiled
Several months later, it was revealed that the eight individuals were engaged in espionage activities on behalf of Israel. The Indian Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) expressed profound interest in the case, categorizing it as a “high priority” concern.
Involvement with Al Dahra Company
It has come to light that these individuals were employed by a company named Al Dahra, which was working on a project for the Qatari government. This project was focused on the acquisition of advanced Italian-made submarines.
Struggles of Al Dahra’s Chief Executive
Reports suggest that the CEO of Al Dahra was also subjected to solitary confinement for a period of two months when he attempted to secure the release of the detained Indian personnel.
Consular Access and Ongoing Trial
Earlier this month, the Indian ambassador to Qatar had the opportunity to meet with the eight individuals following the grant of consular access. India closely monitored the proceedings of their trial, which culminated in the issuance of death sentences on October 26.
Sentenced Indian Navy Personnel
The Indian Navy personnel who have received the death penalty include Captain Navtej Singh Gill, Captain Saurabh Vashisht, Commander Purenendu Tiwari, Captain Birendra Kumar Verma, Commander Sugunakar Pakala, Commander Sanjeev Gupta, Commander Amit Nagpal, and Sailor Ragesh.
